Not since Bruno Bettelheim’s The Uses of Enchantment has there been such an illuminating contribution to the world of children’s fairy tales. Also worthy of note are the exceptional collection of artwork gathered for this book. In addition, usually the art reproductions in these books are excellent, but in this case many of them wer I usually love the Norton Annotated books, but this one was a disappointment.

Fairy Tales and the Culture of Childhood and many other books on folklore and fairy stories. Mar 29, Olivia rated it it was amazing Shelves: Most of us probably know a good many, but perhaps not all that Tatar includes here. I didn’t know I was missing out on so much.

The first let-down was that Tatar also annotated The Annotated Brothers Grimm and The Annotated Hans Christian Andersen, and many of the same fairy tales — with the same or nearly the same annotations claassic are included here.

The best part about this edition is that you get all of the cl I’m a sucker for learning and I love annotated editions of pretty much anything. Booklist Review The commentary is as fascinating as the stories and art in this large-size collection of 26 classic, mainly European, fairy tales, which have been newly translated in an immediate colloquial style.

I read the entire thing through cover to cover. This marvellous collection does exactly what it says on the tin. Why is all this depressing rather than amusing or informative? Disseminated across a wide variety of historical and contemporary media ranging from opera and drama to cinema and advertising, they constitute a vital part of our storytelling capital.

Switch to classic view. Alison Lurie has said more than once that Disneyfication has made magical tales – in Luthi’s sense – inaccessible to the American imagination. It introduced me to different versions of fairy tales told in different areas, different stories all together, artists, how tales began and then were changed either intentionally or through spreading. I’m a sucker for learning and I love annotated editions of pretty much anything.
